Patti Smith serves as the People's Counsel for the State of Maryland. Prior to her appointment she was an Assistant Professor at The Johns Hopkins University, Division of Public Safety Leadership. Patti is the former Chief Counsel for the Baltimore Police Department. She advised the department in matters related to discipline, EEOC, human resources, legislation, public information, and budget. Patti served as Chief Counsel for the City of Baltimore, overseeing a staff of 50 people. She served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, focusing primarily on environmental crimes and tax fraud. Patti also served as a member of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General, serving in a variety of capacities and targeting environmental crimes and laws.
A distinguished attorney, Patti is a member of the adjunct faculty of the University of Baltimore School of Law. She is a renowned speaker and teacher, serves on several judicial and legal committees, and has received numerous awards and honors. Patti is a graduate of The University of Maryland School of Law and holds a Master’s degree in Classical Studies from Indiana University.
