John L. Bergbower is the Director of Investigations for Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and the Director of Internal Security for the Johns Hopkins University’s Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health. He is responsible for the investigation, follow-up and related prosecution of all internal and on-campus matters involving issues of fraud, theft, and drug diversion, as well as all other matters related to safety and security on Hopkins’ East Baltimore, Bayview and Howard County campuses.
John is a retired commander of the Baltimore Police Department where he served as the Acting Director of the Planning and Research Division, District Commander of the Southwestern District and Commanding Officer of the Special Investigations Section of the Criminal Investigation Division.
Upon his retirement in July 2001 after 27 years of service, John accepted a position with the Commissioner of Financial Regulation as its Enforcement Director. In that capacity, he directed a statewide investigative unit responsible for the regulatory oversight and enforcement, as well as criminal enforcement for a number of entities involved in the business and financial arena in the State of Maryland to include the banking, mortgage, and money transmission industries. He has been in his current position with Hopkins since December 2003.
John is a member of the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University, School of Education’s Police Executive Leadership Program. He has a distinguished background as a teacher and lecturer for a number of government agencies, educational institutions and private sector companies. John holds a Master of Science in Management degree from Johns Hopkins University and an MBA from Saint Leo University.
