Domestic Violence Education Program

Sponsored by the Division of Public Safety Leadership, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Community Policing Institute, and the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence, the Domestic Violence Education Program is designed to ensure victim safety and promote batterer accountability by providing community stakeholders with cutting edge methods for responding to domestic violence. The program began with funding from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Stakeholders include, but are not limited to — law enforcement, prosecutors, judges, parole and probation, advocates, health care providers, educators, clergy, public service providers, and the media.

This program provides stakeholders with:

  • Domestic violence education regarding home, workplace, and community
  • New skills in prevention, response, and follow-up
  • Innovative practices, model protocols, and creative strategies in responding to domestic violence
  • Opportunities for collaboration

Educational programs are throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Participants in the programs attend classes up to 40 hours in length, depending on the topic. Since 2002, over 7,000 individuals participated in education programs offered through the Domestic Violence Education Program. They represented every county in Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia, and Northern Virginia. The common bond shared by the participants is the eradication of domestic violence through a collective, coordinated community effort.
