The Leadership and Community Building Fellowship

The Leadership and Community Building Fellowship is designed to create and sustain livable communities by providing neighborhood leaders with new and enhanced skills in:

  • Community planning and organizing
  • Motivating others
  • Maintaining quality organizations on a long-term basis
  • Defining action plans and problem-solving activities
  • Interacting with colleagues in other communities
  • Strengthening relationships with representatives of other agencies (government, nonprofit, religious, education, business, etc.)

The program is built on a foundation of education, mentoring, and networking. The Johns Hopkins University Division of Public Safety Leadership, the Citizens Planning and Housing Association (CPHA), and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Community Policing Institute sponsor the initiative jointly.

CPHA is a nonprofit citizen action group whose members are dedicated to improving the quality of life for people who live and work in Baltimore. Founded in 1941 by citizens of Baltimore to eradicate slum housing, it has expanded to focus on a myriad of urban problems. CPHA holds government and other nonprofit organizations accountable for performance and service. It is one of the largest, oldest, and continuous organizations of its type in the nation.

Generally, participants in the program are the presidents or other officers of community organizations. The represent all walks of life and diverse neighborhoods. One class session is held each year, with plans to expand. At the completion of the program, participants are awarded a certificate from the Johns Hopkins University.
